Hunger Essay

A wave of pain washed over me, gnawing at the insides of my stomach. I awoke breathing heavily, sick with dread. Thousands of angry, desperate wasps were trying to thump their way out from my poor stomach. Beads of sweat formed at the crests of my hot forehead. And the raspiness of my breath, echoed off the mud walls creating a horrific sound of a death threat. All I could see was a wash of bloody red. I ripped off my torn sheets, sitting on the stingy mattress clutching at my frail torso and started to pray  that the pain would eventually cease. The minutes began to turn to hours, and the hours turned to days. About forty eight million people are affected due to food contamination, and three thousand disappear from our world every year.  When can we stop this nightmare from ruining the lives of others? Food illnesses are often caused  from the improper handling of food, the lack of heat, and  improper sanitation. It often causes one to become nauseous, have a high fever, abdominal pains, vomiting, and watery diarrhea.  It causes many  Over the past few years alone there is a startling of number of deaths from the result of food contamination. Each year the percentage rate of those suffering from this disease has now climbed up to thirty percent. Food contamination can be unpredictable  and affect a massive population at a single time. However it is possible to have precautions that may benefit us. Awareness, minimized processing, and  supervision of food processing contribute to the control of foodborne illnesses.

“You may give a man a fish, and he will be satisfied for a day, or teach a man to fish, and he will be satisfied forever. “Knowledge is one important factor that is able break the chain of food borne illnesses. The more educated the work force is, the more productive and  advanced the citizens will be able to become. In an underdeveloped country, there is an increasing number of food borne illnesses compared to a developed country. The  lack of understanding about food borne diseases can be risky.  With no understanding of the deadly diseases that are among us, many citizens in other countries are living in the dark. Knowledge and understanding the risks and precautions of food contamination, goes deeper than fixing this problem for a short period of time, it goes on for much longer. People who are affected, can take measures to protect themselves and the ones they love. With the improvement of education there is more intellectual about the certain types of food and how to recognize diseases to perform the tasks necessary to handle food safely. However there are other prominent actions that can be performed to stop the spread of the disease, and to focus on the process of how the food is handled before reaching our plates.

Where does our food come from? Where has it been? There are many answers that arise from these questions. However, the longer the processing of our food, there are more chances for the food to be contaminated by harmful germs( E.Coli and Hepatitis A.) By minimizing the processing of our food, those chances are reduced. Some companies have even gone the extra step to add tracking GPS stickers on their products to ensure food safety in the time when a disease spreads out. Enforcing the food standards are also key, and the foods should be scrutinized by the tests. The standards of the test have to be extremely strict and there can be no exceptions. The short time pain is for the long term gain. At first, the process will be costly. But it will be worth it, compared to the millions of citizens becoming sick every year. Secondly, the most effective way to prevent food poisoning is to wash our hands. Our hands carry millions of different types of bacteria. Washing our hands is a simple task, and minimizes that chances of becoming sick, incredibly thin.Preventable measures can be taken to stop the spread of the disease, but there can still  be disastrous outbreaks. In the time of an outbreak, there should be an enforcement of surveillance around the outbreak, to control and monitor the process. The information from the outbreak will be able to guide doctors and researchers on how to prevent the illness if it happens in the future.

Before any famous discovery  can abolish all food illnesses, there are many strategies that can be used to tackle it. Education is key, especially for developing countries where many citizens lack the knowledge to handle food properly. Opening the eyes of the clueless citizens, that are in the dark about what they could be exposed to. Furthermore, modern society has made huge advancements in technology, however developed countries are still at risk. From the primary producer to the consumer, the entire food chain is to be effectively controlled, in the time of a disease outbreak. The food chain is an extremely long process, that often, many different pathogens can be picked up from many different locations, which is why it is best to minimize the process. Food is something one needs to survive, however one can be at risk by not eating it properly.. Working together can decrease the many dangerous viruses lurking out there, and saving one person at time.

Haters are going to hate;(

“Oh my gosh she is soo ugly!” she shrieked.

“ I know right?” the other girls agreed, nodding their perfect petite bodies to the beat of the heavy music.

“Did you see what a freak she looks like in the new edition of Entertainment?” a shrill voice added.

She stares out the window out onto Laguna Bay. The sun setting into the beautiful sploshes of glowing orange and magenta swirling around the blue sky.  It’s been a long week. Taking shoots. Acting scenes. Shooting scenes. Having interviews. When was it going to be over? When would she finally deserve a break? Certainly LA was something she didn’t quite expect. Exhaustion grew in her, and she heaped onto the Lazyboy recliner nearby. Then with her stress bitten out nails she bent down to pick up the new Entertainment magazines she had delivered to her hotel every week. She closed her eyes. Does she want to know what people have to say about her? The imperfect, unimportant things that deep inside still bite at her heart? Bringing her nails to her tender lips she begins to chew nervously. One, two, three, and her eyes like butterflies flutter open. A sudden thrash of paper and she’s opened the magazine. It’s been more than a few times lately. People talking crap about her, making fun of how she looked when she was taken by surprise the paparazzi.

Yes, she indeed knew that everything had their consequences. But it didn’t mean that it was her fault that she chose this path. Everyone seemed to be ganging up on her because of her passion for acting. It was the one of the things that she loved dearly and held to her heart. She couldn’t have given up her talents or dreams, could she? Slowly and turning the page, she gasps and sees something that gives her the chills. No, no, no. This isn’t possible. Just when she thought she was having the worst time of her life, an actress she befriended on the show a few years ago was the star of this tabloid. As she read the three full pages of the dirty secret things that were not meant for the public to know, she felt hatred. Hatred, that no matter what her friend had tried to do, she was trapped.

Her friend was someone with low self esteem, and with the help of some magazines and a haters, all it took her was down that roller coaster. They laughed at her because she was at the normal weight of a human being but a few pounds over for a model. They snickered at her because her face was a bit to round, instead of oval. They gossiped about her over the weekends because she had a weird sense of fashion, or that her breasts weren’t large of enough to be a beautiful woman that she actually was.

And now as she turned page after page. All she saw were the details of her friend’s plastic surgery treatments. But yet still there were hate comments, commenting how much she was a fake and a replica of a Barbie doll.

She felt something red boil inside her, then cool down to a low blue, and then to a dark grey. Where was she when her friend was bullied or when she felt trapped? This was her moment to finally change something that mattered. She wasn’t going to allow people step over her or her friend for instance. Something needed to change, and fast.

She finally realized something.. that some people would always hate no matter what,  no matter what she did, there were always going to be haters… if she went one way, people wouldn’t agree, if she went the other way, people still would hate. Why waste time? Why worry so much? Just give it up, she thought, she would  do what she wanted to do. She wouldn’t care about what others thought, said, or acted. She would do what would be right and the best for her. The bickering of unwanted criticism flew out of her soul. She sighed, and slowly  breathed all her stress away. She was going to start a petition.

“ Hello? Can I talk to President…..”

Often we care too much about what others think about us, that we forget to enjoy ourselves and do things that benefit ourselves. All we hear is hate and negative comments. In the past year, I have lost a lot of confidence to all those people who do not understand that the words or influences they have on others. It saddens me, when even my friends make rude comments sometimes. Since I have gone through the pain of losing my confidence and my dignity, I understand that thinking before you act will do a lot for our society. So many people, especially teenagers feel terrible about themselves due to others actions or words they say. So next time, you want to make a remark, just remember, are you going to potentially hurt someone?

Enbridge? No, I don’t think so!

There’s nothing like the feeling of when you’re standing on top of the world. The wind brushing your soft hair against your rosy cheeks, the sweet aroma of pine, and the voice of the mountains. When I look past the fiery sunset and the tall evergreens. The vast amount of the rivers and crystal clear waters below welcome me.There are no words, no picture, or no song that can express nature, but only nature itself. I won’t ever be able to express the feelings I felt, the day I conquered Cypress. Now if i only imagined what others would be feeling, to have this taken away from you? To watch it slowly fade away, and disappear.  The Northern Enbridge Pipeline expansion is an ineffective idea as it endangers the environment, impacts the economy and creates hazards to people who will live near the expansion.

Our environment is our home; it’s where we are kept safe. But with the pipeline expansion our environment is at risk. With this pipeline covering over a distance of 1,170km and 25,000 barrels from Edmonton to Kitimat, the percentage of oil spills increases . Oil spills are huge problems that cannot be fixed, and in the long run create a dent in our environment forever. The oil leaks damage natural habitats, and animals that live in them to die. For instance, the popular fish that we all have come to love: sockeye salmon will be greatly at risk as they die quickly from the intoxicated oil spills and also endanger their prey. The Great Bear rainforest is also at risk with the only ecosystem containing the majestic spirit bear. Secondly, the construction process of building this pipeline, and the complex extraction techniques creates an extra  one hundred MT Co2. For example, “there is so much pollution in the air that if it weren’t for our lungs there would be no place to put it at all, “- Robert Orben. With British Columbia being known as a beautiful province, the pollution creates even more devastation to our home. Lastly, Enbrigde is a company has a spotty history with many spills in the past. One cannot learn to trust them, as they have had more than enough chances to decrease their spillage rate. The company also told employees to cover oil up with sand, marshy grass areas, and under woods. Bring back the Gulf of Mexico disaster massive oil spill in 2011, the damage can still be seen today. One hundred, thirty three thousands barrels of oil  have been reported to been spilled over the decade that Enbridge has been shipping oil.Or the other catastrophes from Enbridge alone. Not only does this expansion affect where we live, but how we shall live.

“Money makes the world go round,” this cliché is undeniably true. The economy is prominent in our society and allows the world to go on and about their daily lives. However, this expansion will impact our economy dramatically. First, the expansion is a huge project that will be around five billion dollars! That amount of money is an incredible amount, which can be implemented to be of more use with other prominent problems that are arising like health care. Secondly, the oil spills damage our tourism rates. British Columbia is known as the one of the world’s most magnificent places to visit, and with the pipeline expansion creating major spills, the reputation can be easily ruined.

Furthermore it does not only affect only the tourism industry but the fishing industry as well. The animals that are affected by the oil spill not only die off, some may poison humans, which choose to eat the delicious smoky salmon or other popular fish. The rise of the gas industry has much more than what meets the eye. The raise of twelve percent will create a dip for other main industries, resulting in no extreme benefit for the whole economy. Not only does the pipeline expansion affect the economy but our social relationships with the Aboriginals, but also our culture.

The project will be invading into Aboriginal traditional lands and creating major disruption for the people that live there. The Aboriginals clearly do not want others to intrude onto their lands and destroy many of their ecosystems in the process. Their culture and traditions rely heavily on nature, and respect it as well. Bryan Joe Jr. of the Coast Salish people said,“as First Nations, we put value in everything that the Creator has given us.” The rest of the Idle No More movement have shown that First Nations have woken up and will not stay silent.“I never want to dip my paddle in oil. I want future generations of First Nations to experience what is left of our culture and regain what has been taken from us.” Enbridge is taking more than their tradition, but their soul and their passions. More than half the population contradict with Enbridge, and there’s more than just a handful of reasons, there are plenty.Furthermore, hundreds of people reported having seizures due to the exposure of crude oil, and even a few were reported dying. Many residents are at risk from the spills that have occurred, and the ones that are going to happen.

All the pain and damage is simply not worth it. The impact on our environment, our people, and the nation we love will last forever. The Enbridge pipeline is a risky gamble for British Columbia. With Enbridge going through two mountain ranges, a dangerous channel, and shipping across the roughest ocean waters in the world, it puts us all at risk. A risk we can’t accept at any price. Are you willing to gamble away thousands of rivers, forests, ecosystems, wildlife and coastal communities for five hundred sixty long term jobs?
